BAR1 Motorsports Ready for Watkins Glen Debut

BAR1 Motorsports Ready for Watkins Glen DebutTUDOR teams will bring their own history to the historic Watkins Glen, Sunday, June 29. The first TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series event at Watkins Glen International, the Sahlen s Six Hours of the Glen also marks the first time BAR1 Motorsports competes on the 3.37-mile, 11-turn circuit. The race will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 starting at 11 a.m. ET, Sunday, June 29.

With over 140 feet in elevation changes – twice each lap – BAR1 drivers, Martin Plowman, David Cheng and Doug Bielefeld will face a number of challenges. A lap around Watkins Glen includes long, fast straightaways, downhill cornering, uphill exits and a full compliment of high, medium and low speed corners. Throw in some seriously heavy braking zones and you ll understand why sports car drivers love the Glen.

Martin Plowman leads our team as our pro driver for this event, said team owner Brian Alder. Martin did a great job at Sebring, as lead driver in our primary car, and was running some of the fastest lap times of all the PC cars toward the end of the race. We are anxious to show what we can do here at the Glen.

Brian has assembled a good lineup for the race, said Martin Plowman fresh off his run at the Indy 500. I feel we have all of the ingredients for a good weekend and I m looking forward to continuing with co-driver Doug Bielefield. Doug has made great progress already this year. He and the team deserve to be on the podium soon, so I hope I can help them achieve that goal here at the iconic Watkins Glen Raceway.

I m also looking forward to teaming up with David Cheng who I know from my days of driving for OAK Racing in the World Endurance Championship, added Martin. David s a very solid driver, just coming off a great race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”

I m very excited to welcome David Cheng to our program, Alder added. David is a great driver and his experience in endurance racing will definitely play a role in helping us stand on the podium at weekend s end. He is a great guy and Im glad we have a chance to work together. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a long term relationship.

“I want to thank BAR1 motorsports for this opportunity to drive at the Glen, said David Cheng. From the start of the season i’ve been aiming to do the NAEC alongside my confirmed program of Asian Le Mans Series, LM24 and my home round in Shanghai of the WEC. We we’re able to put together Daytona and Sebring earlier this year with a good 4th and 3rd place finish respectively, but until last week we thought that was it for the North American races.

Going into this coming weekend, continued Cheng, and especially just finishing with a strong LMP2 result from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, means I’ve got a big boost of confidence. I know BAR1 is a great team and i’ve worked with Plowy before it should make the whole process of being with a new team that much easier. I’m really excited to work with a team of this caliber and i’m sure we will have the ability to challenge for the top spot come sunday.”

Kansas marked the halfway point of our season, said Alder. I also feel it was a turning point for our team. We had a successful drama free weekend. As always, our crew led by Colin Adams put together a great car and it ran every lap of every session. Doug Bielefeld was able to get some valuable seat time and has become much more comfortable in the car. I m confident the experience he gained in Kansas will pay dividends at Watkins Glen.

I am really honored to have the opportunity to represent BAR1 Motorsports at historic Watkins Glen, said Doug Bielefeld. Our team is carrying a lot of momentum from the last race and I think that will benefit us in the longer endurance race. The team is really coming together and I’m proud to be part of it.”

Alder will also do double duty this weekend serving as owner/driver in the Cooper Lites Championship driving the TOP1 Oil BAR1 Lites Prototype. Currently leading the championship in points, Alder his looking forward to racing at the Glen and hoping to continue his winning ways.

Watkins Glen is a track I’ve never been as a spectator, crew member or a driver, said Alder with a grin. I m excited that my first opportunity to see this beautiful, historic track will be from the seat of our Top1 Oil Prototype Lites car. We will have some strong competition out there in L2 this weekend, and we are aiming to increase our points lead and keep the Top1 Oil Car on the top of the charts all weekend.

The TUDOR Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 starting at 11 a.m. ET, Sunday, June 29.

About BAR1 Motorsports: BAR1 Motorsports competes in the Tudor United Sports Car Championship and Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Series. The team is located in Plain City, Ohio. Team owner, Brian Alder, has been an active and winning crew chief in the American Le Mans Series, now Tudor United Sports Car Championship, since its inception. You can find out more about BAR1 at www.bar1motorsports.com, follow the team on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Bar1Motorsports or Twitter @bar1motorsports.

The Tudor United Sports Car Championship, formerly the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr n, merged with the Grand-Am Road Racing Series at the conclusion of the 2013 season. In the tradition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, multiple classes of cars – purpose-built prototypes and production-based Grand Touring automobiles – race on the track at the same time to create compelling race action and constant passing. All cars in the Series compete using one of five approved alternative fuels or energy sources: clean sulfur-free diesel, cellulosic E85 or E10, Isobutanol and electric hybrid technologies. The Series has more automobile marques involved than any other major race series in the world as manufacturers develop relevant technologies on track that transfer directly to the customer showroom. The Tudor United Sports Car Championship competes at North America s premier road racing tracks and selected temporary street circuits in major urban markets.
