NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Garbage is piling up on Long Island as a result of a trucking shortage.

A quick fix, which would have the waste taken off the island by railcars, has to be approved by the Department of Environmental Conservation, WCBS 880 s Sophia Hall reported.

But Adrienne Esposito of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment said the trash buildup has been a problem for years and a better solution is needed.

The problem on Long Island is we are an island. That s the good news and the bad news, Esposito said. On an island you have limited space. We need a really good solid waste management plan that includes a lot of recycling, but also includes rail to get some of this waste off of the island.

Esposito said there are two landfills left on Long Island; the others were closed because of environmental factors.

They are reaching capacity. We call them Mount Trashmore, Esposito said. No one wants to live next to a mound and a mountain of garbage.
