ITV Daytime ditches satellite OB trucks for eco-friendly 4x4s

Itv cars ITV Daytime is replacing its traditional satellite OB truck fleet with custom-built eco-friendly Mitsubishi Outlander 4×4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, in what it says is a “complete change in workflow for ITV and a UK first.” The ITV team worked with Mitsubishi and system integrator Broadcast Wireless Systems to create “completely new” OB vehicles for news gathering.

Inside the 4×4 vehicles there is a portable transmission unit – the LiveU LU600, which provides a 100Mbps high-speed bonded Internet connection – and a KA dish, for when the cellular signal is contended or reduced. The change enables ITV shows to cover the UK and Europe for a fraction of the costs associated with traditional satellite trucks. The ease of use in operating the 4x4s also makes it possible, says ITV, for more staff to get involved in news-gathering.

An ITV spokesperson said: “[The vehicle is] versatile, rugged and eco-friendly. It is also congestion charge-free. To the viewer at home we are getting our correspondents and camera crews to places that a traditional OB truck could not.”

The 4×4 vehicles will be launched in November for ITV Daytime live links (on Good Morning Britain and This Morning). In practical terms, this means the links will move to bonded IP distribution via LiveU and KA, and no longer use SIS vehicles.

The Cobham 8100, military-grade KA dish auto-points to the satellite within 40 seconds of deployment and provides a guaranteed internet connection into the LiveU for transmitting single camera, stand-up OBs back to the ITV Studios in London.

If ITV needs to be more portable, operators can remove the LiveU unit and follow the story on-foot, away from the vehicle, using the 8 internal SIMs.

Motor Vehicle Amendment bill’s passage unlikely in monsoon session

As no consensus was reached among the government side and some political parties at a meeting convened by the upper house’s Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, it has been decided to send the bill to the Select Committee, the sources said. They said that it was however agreed that the Bill should be passed in the first week of the next session of Parliament after the committee submits its report.

The sources said that Kurien on Friday morning held a meeting of leaders of the parties in Rajya Sabha so that a consensus could be reached and the Bill passed in the current session.

At the meeting, attended among others by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, SP leader Naresh Agarawal and leaders of the Left parties, DMK, AIADMK and other parties, the Minister sought to address the the objections regarding provisions raised by some parties but they were not satisfied and demanded that the Bill should be sent to Select Committee.

Gadkari was keen on passing the Bill this session. The government, during the previous session, had listed the Bill but could not be taken up. Sources said that Kurien had made a similar attempt earlier also to reach at consensus but failed.

Also Read: Maharashtra assembly proposes hike in motor vehicles tax[3] The changes in the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016 were approved by the Union Cabinet on March 31, proposing hefty penalties for various traffic offences, three-year jail terms for parents of minors caught driving and causing fatal accidents and a ten-fold increase in compensation for families of accident victims. According to the Consumer Voice survey, 95.58 per cent of the respondents believe that the amendment is a strong bill. Approximately 1,374 accidents and 400 accidental deaths take place every day on Indian roads, as per a report by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry in 2015. A tough law is needed to bring down by 50 per cent the road traffic accidents by 2020, a commitment India made by adopting the Brasilia Declaration for Road Safety.

The Bill amends the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to address issues such as third party insurance, regulation of taxi aggregators, and road safety.

Under the Act, the liability of the third party insurer for motor vehicle accidents is unlimited, but the Bill caps the maximum liability for third party insurance in case of a motor accident at Rs 10 lakh in case of death and at Rs 5 lakh in case of grievous injury.

The Bill also provides for a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund which would provide compulsory insurance cover to all road users in India for certain types of accidents.

Ashok Leyland Bags Order For 3019 Buses From Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has placed an order for 3019 buses from Ashok Leyland[1], the company has announced. The order is one of the largest from a State Transport Undertaking for a single OEM to be executed in a single financial year, the company said. Ashok Leyland also announced that the order size is about INR 650 crore, and will fulfill requirements from KSRTC, NWKRTC, BMTC and NEKRTC.

Speaking about the order, Ashok Leyland – Managing Director, Vinod K.

Dasari said, “We are very happy to receive the confirmation of this order from KSRTC.

Our ability to bring value to customers like KSRTC, is a testament to our superior technology and innovation, combined with low costs.”
