The £40m solution to Plymouth’s rush hour nightmares?

WATCH ABOVE: How the Forder Valley Link Road will look when it’s finished

This may look like another set of irritating roadworks – but it could be the ?40million fix that makes Plymouth’s rush hours more bearable in the future. Anyone heading to or from Derriford or the north of the city right now will be sick of the long-running roadworks on Tavistock Road.[1] The closure of William Prance Road earlier this year has caused daily tailbacks on the stretch, which is one of Plymouth’s busiest roads.

But look a little closer at the work taking place and you can see the very beginnings of one of the biggest roadworks projects the city has seen in recent memory – all aimed at solving the congestion chaos once and for all.

The first section of the long-awaited Forder Valley Link Road[3] is beginning to take shape near the Land Registry offices on William Prance Road. The ?33million link road[4] will eventually connect Derriford, the A38, Estover and Crownhill to a new ?7.9million roundabout at Forder Valley itself.

The main work is set to begin next year and will take two years to complete. But the road’s final end point, leading onto Tavistock Road by the Future Inn hotel, is already taking shape. The Derriford roadworks are due to finish early in 2018, after which the rest of the building work on the Forder Valley Link Road will begin.

The link road is a proposed one-kilometer stretch linking William Prance Road in Derriford and the junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road[5].

The new road will aim to reduce delays between the A38 and Derriford by providing a new route from the east to the north of the city, avoiding the busy A38 Manadon junction and the A386 Tavistock Road. A spokesman for Plymouth City Council said: “The scheme will improve accessibility for vehicles, buses, cyclists and pedestrians to key destinations such as Derriford Hospital, the University of St.

Mark and St. John and the Plymouth Science Park.” The ?33.5 million scheme has secured approval in principle with a ?22.5 million contribution from the Department for Transport (DfT) subject to a final business case, which was due to be submitted last month.

Meanwhile, work to create a huge new community[7] beside the massive road is well under way, with the first phase of the development already nearing completion.
Palmerston Heights, the new Seaton Neighbourhood at Forder Valley, will see 873 new homes built to create a new “heart” for the north of Plymouth.[8]

Forder Valley Link Road: The facts

Set to begin next year and take two years to complete, the ?33m Forder Valley Link Road and ?7.9m Forder Valley roundabout improvements will see major changes to the city’s transport network in the Forder Valley and Derriford[9] area.

The link road is a proposed one-kilometer stretch linking William Prance Road in Derriford and the junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road[10].
The new road will aim to reduce delays between the A38 and Derriford by providing a new route from the east to the north of the city, avoiding the busy A38 Manadon junction and the A386 Tavistock Road.

Why the council things the Forder Valley Link Road is a key project:

  • Supported by a bridge over the Bircham Valley
  • Larger signalised junction at the Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road intersection
  • Includes walking and cycling facilities throughout 16,000 vehicles per day expected to use this new route
  • Provides alternative route between A38 and Derriford and resilience to network
  • Complements proposals at Derriford Roundabout and Manadon Roundabout

Total cost: ?33.4million Construction anticipated: May 2018 – May 2020
