15% decrease in road fatalities —Transport Ministry

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Transport Minister Mike Henry says his ministry’s efforts to arrest the road fatality rate is paying dividends as there has been a seven per cent decrease in fatal crashes and 15 per cent decrease in fatalities, when contrasted to the corresponding period last year. Henry, in a release today said statistics from the Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry reveal as at October 27, that 269 people have died as a result of road crashes, while the figure stood at 318 for the same period last year. He added that if motorists continue to heed the warnings and change their behaviour in the traffic environment, October could very well record the least number of fatalities so far this year.

The number of fatalities for October now stands at 11, while the figure for September was 19.

July was the bloodiest month on the road, when 40 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
With just over two months to go before year end, Henry said he is still hopeful that the road fatality figure will be below 300 for this year.
