Indefinite transport strike begins in Kushtia

Indefinite strike enforced by transport owners and workers protesting assault and harassment on them by the law enforcers, is underway in the district, disrupting road communications between the country’s northern and southwestern regions. Transport owners and workers associations of the district on Monday jointly called the strike for Tuesday. No long route buses were seen on the roads since the strike began at 6:00 am.

Road communications between southern districts with northern regions remained suspended following the strike, creating immense sufferings to hundreds of passengers. Azgar Ali, president of Bus-Minibus Owners Group, said that the assault and harassment incidents on transport owners and workers by members of law enforcing agencies have increased recently. Protesting the recent incidents of arrest, they enforced the strike as there was no alternative to it, he said.

They will continue their programme until solving the problem, said Azgar.

In this October, seven cases have been filed in connection with drug-related crimes and 10 transport workers have been sent to jail.
