It is though the driver swerved the double-decker 132 to North Greenwich into the path of the fleeing van and blocked the road.

Witness Tracey Emmerton wrote on Twitter: ‘Can on the run from police crashing into everything as it passed, finally stopped by bus!

‘Well done to this bus driver!

So many cars written off and could of [sic] killed someone!’

A Metropolitan Police spokesman commented: ‘Police began an authorised pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle that failed to stop for officers at approximately 12:38hrs on Saturday, 11 November.

‘During the course of the pursuit, the vehicle collided with a number of stationary vehicles.

‘A male was detained in the Blackfen Road area after decamping from the vehicle following a road traffic collision.

‘There have been no reported injuries.’
