Tragedy on the roads as boy, 8, and a 28-year-old woman killed after being hit by a truck near Newcastle

An eight-year-old boy and a 28-year-old woman have been killed after being hit by a truck near Newcastle on Sunday.

The woman and child were believed to be pedestrians when they were struck by a vehicle around 5.30pm at Cameron Park.

The pair were believed to have been known to each other but were not related.

Emergency crews were called to the M1 but both the woman and boy died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old man, was treated for shock and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit also attended the scene and are investigating the incident.

The M1 was closed for more than five hours while investigations took place.
