Truck driver in court charged with causing death of Haltwhistle man on A66

A TRUCK driver has appeared before a district judge in Carlisle accused of causing the death of a Haltwhistle man by dangerous driving. Ashley Cole (56) from Ecclesfield, Sheffield, is alleged to have caused the death of Jamie Armstrong on the A66 at Stainmore on September 8, 2016. Prosecutors said the defendant was driving a Scania lorry at the time.

Mr Armstrong (30), from Haltwhistle, was driving an Audi A4 and was pronounced dead at the scene. District Judge Gerald Chalk said that the case should be sent to Carlisle Crown Court. The case was listed for a hearing on March 9.

Cole’s lawyer, David James, indicated his client would be pleading not guilty to the allegation, though he did not formally enter a plea.

The defendant was granted bail.
