Badals take over HP transport firms too

Dominating the luxury road transport business in Punjab, the Badals now have a major share of the business in Himachal Pradesh too. The Indo-Canadian Transport Company, reportedly owned by the Badal family, has bought several small and medium transport companies in Himachal that ply Volvo buses to Delhi.

Metro Eco Green Resorts Ltd has bought a number of transport firms, including Swagtam, Luxmi Holidays, Northern Travels, Leo Travels, Tanishq Travels and Apsara Travels. These companies ply four to 20 Volvo buses, mostly from Manali and Dharamsala to Delhi.

SAD chief Sukhbir Badal and his wife and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal are shareholders in Metro Eco Green Resorts Ltd, as per their affidavits filed with the Election Commission. (Follow The Tribune on Facebook[1]; and Twitter @thetribunechd[2]) Joginder Pal Sharma, the previous owner of Swagtam Travels, confirmed that he had sold the company to Metro Eco Green Resorts Ltd.

Asked if he was pressured, he said, “I was offered a good price. I am 70 years old and no one in my family wants to continue with the business.” Anand Aggarwal also said he had sold his company Luxmi Holidays Private Transport Company to the Badals and that there was “no pressure.” But sources claimed the owners of these companies had given an undertaking that they would not enter the business again. Pleading anonymity, some owners said since the pickup points of private transport companies in Delhi had too been bought, small firms would ultimately have to sell their business to big players.

Minister for Transport Govind Singh Thakur could not be contacted for comment.
