A two kilometre quarantine zone has been set up in central Queensland over fears of toxic contamination after a tyre on a truck carrying an extremely hazardous chemical caught alight.

Emergency Services were called to the incident on Leichhardt Hwy at Wowan about 12.15pm after reports a truck tyre was on fire, the Courier Mail[2] reported.

The driver was able to escape injuries after pulling the truck over to the side of the road.

The truck was carrying ammonium nitrate, according to a Queensland Police spokesperson.

An exclusion zone has been set up by authorities until the blaze has been extinguished.

Troys Rd at Charlton, west of Brisbane, is reported to be blocked in both directions after a truck carrying a bulldozer rolled.

In Queensland approximately 99% of ammonium nitrate is used as an explosive in mining operations and the remainder is used for making fertiliser, the Work Cover Queensland website states.

Police say that delays are to be expected.
