Melbourne[2] commuters are facing traffic chaos after a truck jack-knifed across all four lanes of a major freeway early on Thursday morning.

The incident has blocked all four lanes of the WestGate Freeway prior to the Burnley Tunnel after it was hit by a smaller truck.

A spokesman from Vic Traffic told Daily Mail Australia the jackknifed truck also has a flat front steer tyre and would need to be towed.

While a tow truck is en route, there is a significant amount of traffic for the vehicle to navigate, which is expected to increase the already lengthy delay.

Vic Roads is advising drivers to avoid the area completely, and drivers currently on the freeway are urged to exit as soon as they can.

Anyone using the West Gate Fwy should exit at Princes Hwy/Geelong Rd and head through Footscray. People using Citylink can use Flemington Rd.

More to come.
