A former reserve sheriff’s deputy is facing hate crime charges after telling Louisiana authorities that he plowed his pickup truck into a convenience store because he thought its Sikh owners were Muslim.

Chad Horsley, 27, was arrested Monday and charged with one count each[1] of hate crimes, simple criminal damage to property, and criminal mischief, and two counts of false impersonation of a peace officer. He was later released on £56,000 bond, the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper reports.

Horsley’s father, Samuel Horsley, told the New York Daily News he doesn’t believe the alleged act was motivated by hatred.

Instead, he said, his son “must’ve just snapped.”
