Rail freight group DB Cargo on track to open new Wolverhampton logistics centre

The GBP6 million project will double the size of the city’s steel rail terminal in Horseley Fields. The current DB Cargo UK facility has the capability of storing and handling 1,380 steel coils. The new centre will increase this by 1,944 coils, giving a total capacity of 3,325 coils – 40,000 tonnes of steel.

DB Cargo UK transports the coils by rail to the site, where it is then distributed to manufacturers across the West Midlands to make products including white goods and cars. Sheffield-based JF Finnegan started work on the site at the beginning of March. The steel frame is due for erection late April with completion of the scheme anticipated in the autumn.

In addition to constructing the Logistics Centre, Finnegan will also coordinate the installation of a new internal rail line.

Paul Ballantyne, commercial manager at JF Finnegan, said: “We are delighted to be working with DB Cargo UK and William Saunders (the architects) on this project.

“Our extensive experience of working within the manufacturing and industrial sectors was fundamental in securing this scheme.”
