BREAKING: Military transport plane crashes into road in US – emergency services on scene

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the US National Guard cargo plane – a C-130 – came down reported with five people on board in Savannah, Georgia. Firefighters and ambulance crews were called as the aircraft’s wreck became an inferno at the intersection. It is understood the plane was heading for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona

People have been urged to avoid the area while emergency crews deal with the incident – with two people reported dead. C-130s are a staple of the US military and are capable of carrying up to 90 passengers.

Pictures from the scene show huge plumes of black smoke rising from the wreckage which can be seen for miles around. Cars and trucks can also be seen on the roadway near the wreckage, but it is unclear if any were involved in the crash.

Witnesses said the “ground shook like a bomb was going off” as the plane came down shortly after take-off at 11.30am local time.

The C-130 crashed near Highway 21 – which has been closed by emergency services.

Denver Goodwin told WGNO: “It was horrible. The ground shook like a bomb was going off. All the people in the building started panicking.

It was absolutely horrible.”

Abby Murphy, a spokeswoman for the Chatham County Emergency Management Agency, said that the aircraft had gone down on the outskirts of Savannah, about 175 miles (280 km) southeast of Atlanta. Local media reported that the plane was stationed at the National Guard’s 165th Aircraft Wing in Savannah. The Savannah airport said on Twitter that it was “assisting local agencies with an aircraft incident off property.

No impacts to airport operations at this time.”

Chatham County Emergency Management Agency tweeted: “There has been a plane crash at the intersection of Hwy 21 at Crossgate Rd.

“Roads will be shut down.

Please avoid the area.”
