A fire engine was issued with a parking fine while the on-duty crew staffing it were using the gym.

But the traffic warden faced backlash on social media after photographs were posted on Facebook[2] – forcing the local council to revoke the ticket.

East Grinstead Fire Station were using their local gym earlier this month because their own facilities at the fire station were being refurbished.

However, they were issued with an enforcement action while using the fitness facilities.

It prompted a barrage of criticism from Facebook users who branded it as ‘shameful’ and ‘ridiculous’.

Angela Brown wrote: ‘Surely a fire engine should be exempt from parking tickets/fines! Ludicrous’.

Debbie Beynon-Brailey said: ‘All emergency vehicles should be exempt from parking tickets…. Come on traffic wardens are you really that heartless.’

Julie Shenton commented: ‘This is disgraceful…

I now the traffic warden has a job to do but come on! If it was a police car would they still have ticketed it? All Emergency services should be exempt from such charges.’

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a fire engine was issued with a parking ticket, but that the issue is being resolved with the council.

Mid Sussex District Council said the fine will be withdrawn.

Councillor Gary Marsh, Cabinet Member for Service Delivery, said: ‘One of our civil enforcement officers was patrolling the area of Little King Street in East Grinstead and identified that a fire engine was parked in a bay designated for police vehicles only.

‘A penalty charge notice was issued.

‘However, since then it has come to our notice that the fire crew were on official duty, with the police aware of their use of the bay.

‘We have notified the fire service that the ticket will be withdrawn.’

On its Facebook page, East Grinstead fire station wrote: ‘Just a very quick note in response to the viral pictures flying around at the moment that this situation is being dealt with.

‘We understand and appreciate everyone has a job to do and that’s how our society works.

‘We will always respect this but always challenge professionally when needed.

‘At the time our immediate response crew were using fitness facilities in the Atrium as our facility is undertaking maintenance.

‘They believed they were parked appropriately and were still able to be on the appliance within 47 seconds for an emergency.’

The East Grinstead crews have since been offered free gym membership at their local golf course, so they can park without fear of being issued with another ticket.
