A train in Italy has ploughed into a big-rig truck that was on the tracks, killing the train’s engineer and injuring 16 passengers.

One passenger was critically injured while the other 15 were in less serious condition, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

One passenger was critically injured while the other 15 were in less serious condition, according to Italian news agency ANSA

The crash occurred about 23:00 on Wednesday on a regional run between Turin and Ivrea, a suburb.

The regional railway says that for unknown reasons the truck had smashed through a barrier that is lowered upon a train’s approach and ended up on the tracks.

The crash derailed three train cars near the town of Caluso.

Rescuers searched the wreckage in case any passengers were trapped.
