A truck driver who crushed a father-of-six to death with his 15 tonne vehicle claims the accident happened because he was reaching for a can of coke.

Michael Templeton, 31, has pleaded guilty to killing Kari-Pekka Maunus when he drove over the top of the 49-year-old father’s Toyota Hilux in his freight truck.

Blood tests revealed the Victorian truck driver had ice in his system but rather than blame intoxication he told his psychologist he crashed because he was reaching for a drink.

The court heard he was driving erratically before he approached slow traffic on the Calder Freeway at Taylors Lakes in March last year.

Templeton was speeding in the 80km/h zone before he drove over the top of the Mr Maunus vehicle.

The fatal accident happened o at Taylors Lakes, Victoria after peak-hour traffic backed-up on the Calder Freeway.

During the plea hearing at Melbourne’s Magistrate Court, Templeton sobbed and whispered ‘sorry’ throughout.

The court determined he was remorseful as he attempted to take his own life after the crash.

Templeton pleaded guilty on Thursday to culpable driving which could result in a maximum 20 years sentence.

The freight driver will be sentenced next week.
