Elderly couple die in head-on road crash on N24 Limerick to Tipperary road after UK-registered car collides with truck

AN elderly couple have died following a head-on road crash in Co Limerick this morning. The two-vehicle crash, involving a UK registered car and a domestic oil delivery truck, occurred outside Dromkeen village on the N24 Limerick[1] to Tipperary Road at around 10.30am.

The two people were pronounced dead at the scene

Emergency services attended the scene within minutes of the collision. The man in his 80s and the woman in her 70s were pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. It’s understood the couple who died in the collision are UK nationals.

The truck driver was taken to University Hospital Limerick for shock, but was not injured, sources said. The crash site was covered with debris, it’s understood. Two units from Cappamore Fire Station attended at the scene as well as local Gardai and HSE paramedics.

Emergency services said they received a 999 call of a serious road crash at 10.36am, at a location known as The Crossroads on the Limerick side of the N24. The road remains closed off to allow gardai carry out a technical examination of the collision scene. Gardai at Bruff are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch.

A Garda spokesman said: “Shortly before 11am Gardai and emergency services were called to the scene of a collision involving as car and a lorry on the N24 Limerick to Tipperary road. “The collision occurred on a straight stretch of road at Gortnadromin near the village of Dromkeen. “The occupants of the car; a man in his 80s and woman 70s, were both pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

“The driver of the lorry – a male in his 40s – was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.”

“The local Coroner has been notified and arrangements are being made for the bodies to be removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where post mortem examinations will be carried out.
