Hauliers locked in a struggle to keep their show on the road

When live entertainment shut down, so did Terry Goodwin's source of revenue. Before the pandemic, Conference Haul International had generated ?2.6 million a year from transporting electrical kit to the X Factor studio or lighting equipment to events in Cannes and Barcelona; now its managing director is bidding for ten days' work delivering supplies to Tesco for a fee that makes little dent in the company's monthly outgoings.

The challenges don't end there. Many European conference clients are considering holding virtual events in future, a prospect that does nothing for the recently upgraded fleet of lorries that was left idle in the company's yard in Chobham, Surrey, when Covid-19 struck.
