A road rule question asking whether cars should turn right during a yellow light has confused dozens of frustrated drivers.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads posted a quiz to its social media on Tuesday to test motorists’ knowledge.
A graphic shows a blue car waiting part way across white lines in a four-way intersection during a yellow light, and the quiz asked whether the driver should pass through the intersection, reverse back, or wait.
A simple road rule question asking whether cars should turn right during a yellow light has left some Australians baffled
‘You know your road rules, and now’s your chance to prove it,’ the department wrote.
‘The driver of the blue car is turning right. What action do they need to take now that the traffic light has changed to yellow?’
‘A. Stop where they are and wait for the next green light.
B. Complete the right turn on the yellow or red light when safe to do so. C. Reverse back until their vehicle is behind the stop line.’
Social media users flocked to the comment section to share their answers.
‘The driver should not have driven over the stop line if they were not able to drive freely through the intersection,’ one remarked.
WHAT SHOULD THE DRIVER DO?
- Stop and wait for the next green light 23 votes
- Complete turn on yellow or red light when safe 157 votes
- Reverse back behind the stop line 12 votes

‘D: proceed to complete massive doughnut in centre,’ another joked.
Others said drivers should continue through the intersection.
‘B: and always have your steering wheel straight and never in a turn position while you wait… just in case you get rear ended and and hit oncoming traffic,’ one wrote.
One man suggested the situation illustrated ‘the most misunderstood’ road rule.
‘This and the merging rules and indicating on roundabouts are BY FAR the most misunderstood rules on our roads!’ he wrote.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads confirmed the driver should complete the turn, option B.
‘You must stop on a yellow light, unless it is unsafe to do so.
The yellow light is not the end of the green light phase – it is the beginning of the red light phase,’ it state on its website.
‘If it’s safe to stop, you must not drive past the stop line at the yellow traffic light or, if there is no stop line, the traffic light.’
