U.S. 19 lanes closed after pickup truck crashes into police cruiser, police say

CLEARWATER — Southbound lanes of U.S.

19 closed Tuesday evening after a crash between a pickup truck and a police SUV, according to Clearwater Police. The pickup truck slammed into the police vehicle while an officer was making a traffic stop near Drew Street just before 7 p.m., police said. The crash seriously injured the driver of the truck, who was transported to Morton Plant Hospital as a trauma alert.

Police said the officer escaped injury because he was away from his SUV and speaking to a pulled-over driver at the time of impact. The officer’s Chevy Tahoe was significantly damaged in the crash. Police said the impact of the pickup truck pushed the SUV, which was originally on the left shoulder of the highway, across the road.

The southbound lanes of U.S.

19 south of State Road 590 will likely be shut down for several hours, according to police.
