Ex-policeman jailed for £2m drug plot

A former police inspector who was involved in a huge drug-smuggling operation has been jailed for six and a half years.

David Brown[1], 51, and his accomplice Patrick Hattie, 52, were caught with cocaine, cannabis resin and herbal cannabis valued at more than £2 million after importing drugs hidden inside machinery from Spain into Scotland.

Brown, of Carfin, Lanarkshire, said he had been duped into trafficking drugs after being recruited by Lawrence Phee, a haulage company boss who ran the illegal enterprise. Brown was stopped at Cairnryan ferry port in Dumfries and Galloway with a consignment as he waited to board a ferry to Ireland. He and Hattie, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, were convicted of being concerned in the supply of the drugs between November
