Volvo Trucks and Bucher Municipal build electric trucks for sewer cleaning

Volvo Trucks is cooperating with Bucher Municipal to develop an all-electric truck based on the Volvo FL Electric specifically for sewer cleaning. Bucher Municipal, a supplier of vehicles and equipment for cleaning and clearing operations, plans to deliver up to 80 all-electric sewer cleaning trucks to European cities by the end of 2023. Volvo Trucks sees the cooperation as an important strategic step towards the electrification of one of the most complicated and demanding tasks in cities. “We are proud to have Bucher Municipal as a strategic partner, and we expect the collaboration to bring new insights that contribute to our goal of electrifying all types of applications,” says Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.

Bucher also calls the electrification of such commercial vehicles challenging. He says Volvo Trucks has proven over many years “that they can successfully provide highly reliable and well-documented battery solutions for buses, trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. Our partnership with Volvo Trucks is a win-win solution,” explains Per Lovring, CEO of Bucher Municipal Denmark.

That’s all the two companies have to say. An electric cleaning machine from Bucher Municipal is already in use in Bern, Switzerland. The CityCat 2020ev is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 56 kWh and is said to run an eight-hour shift.

With the 22 kW charger, the battery can be fully recharged within two to three hours. The FL Electric is a mid-sized e-truck. Volvo had already introduced the model in 2018 as one of the first electric models.

The 16-tonne truck with a range of up to 300 kilometres has been available to order since 2019.
